At our branch this week there have been lots of Halloween activities for children, including special storytimes, crafts, and parties. My favorite activity, though, is something I call "The Storytime Strut". This is when the kids attending a storytime get together and march through the library wearing their Halloween costumes. I really enjoy seeing the parade of tiny tots. The little bumble bees, Yodas, and Dorothy Gales, complete with sparkling ruby slippers, enjoy themselves too. But why should they have all the fun?

Halloween is a holiday that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, especially if you have an occasional liking for all things loathsome. As a tribute to the macabre, here is a gruesome matching game to play. Test your intuition or use your smarts and see if you can match any of the following items with the book in which it appears as a murder weapon.
a bonsai tree [2] Bangkok 8 by John Burdett
a mouse cord [3] Posted to Death by Dean James
an espresso machine [4] Misery by Stephen King
an exploding cow [5] Savage Run by C. J. Box
a car full of snakes [6] Bloody Bonsai by Peter Abresch
a frozen leg of lamb [7] Florida Roadkill by Tim Dorsey
a card catalog drawer rod [8] Skin and Other Stories by Roald Dahl
a pair of designer jeans [9] Uncommon Grounds by Sandra Balzo
a garlic canape [10] Miss Zukas and the Library Murders by Jo Dereske
a manual typewriter [11] Crouching Buzzard, Leaping Loon by Donna Andrews
Hint: Click on the lethal weapons to get the answers.

Happy Halloween!
