The Beekeeper's Apprentice is the first in a series, which was recommended to me by a friend. The author, Laurie R. King, reports that a trunk containing the writings of a Mary Russell was mysteriously delivered to her. She has no idea who Mary Russell was, and she finds the story farfetched, but she needed the money, so she published this book. It turns out Mary Russell was a brilliant young woman who met Sherlock Holmes, after he had retired to Sussex, and became his protégé. He trained her and together they solved several mysteries. The depiction of Sherlock Holmes is very convincing, and the character of Mary Russell is fascinating. A great series for anyone to read, especially if you’re a Sherlock Holmes fan.
