[2]Newbery winning author Sid Fleishchman died Wed. March 17, one day after turning 90 years old. Sid won the Newbery for The Whipping Boy [3]. Sid's son Paul is also a Newbery winner - for Joyful Noise: Poems for two voices [4]. They are the only father and son to have both won a Newbery Medal.
Some other books of Sid's you might want to try: The Giant Rat of Sumatra: or Pirates galore [5], about a boy on a pirate ship in 1846 California; Bandit's Moon [6], also set in mid 1800's California, The Entertainer and the Dybbuk [7], about a ventriliquist possessed by the ghost of a boy killed in the Holocaust, and Sid's latest book The Dream Stealer [8], about a creature who gets tired of stealing nightmares and so starts taking happy dreams, but takes one from a girl who wants hers back.
