It has been said that we learn through our hands and fall in love through our eyes. I don't know if either is true, but I suspect both are. One thing I do know is that Eros [2] is the most capricious of deities. We can't control who we're attracted to any more than we can control a sneeze.
What makes one desire another? No one knows, and from what I've seen, no one has anything close to a good guess. Pheromones? A particular resemblance to the favored parent? An allignment of stars or genes or personality traits? If love made sense, it would be just another human characteristic like wisdom teeth and the ability to laugh. We would never lose sleep over it, never long for it, never kill in defense of it, and never feel that cruelest of pains when we fear we have lost it.
