Friday, April 22 is Earth Day and we hope you can make small (or big) changes to show our planet we love it.
ReNest [3], a personal favorite site to follow for green living tips and more, recently shared 10 Things You Can Do Today to Start Living Greener [4]. Here are a few that I am starting to do which are mentioned in their tips:
- Recycle everything you can. Did you know most grocery stores accept plastic grocery bags that are not accepted in recycling pickup or at recycling centers?
- Bring your own bags to the store - every store (and the library!)
- Live with less. This should be easy especially when you can check items out from the library for FREE!

But don't stop there. There are ways you can incorporate green living with each library visit.
- Switch to email notifications [5] and help us cut down on unnecessary paper use and postage.
- Bring your own bag when you check out items from the library. You can purchase a HCPL tote bag on behalf of our Friends of the Library [6] which are available at many of our branches.
- Use our digital media catalog [7]. Optimize your MP3 player or eBook readers and check out content for free from the comfort of your own home!
Interested in other ways to be green?
On Thursday, April 21st, City of Houston and other local organizations will participate in Lights Out Houston [8], a weekend long initiative to reduce unnecessary light use. Consider turning off your lights too and help reduce unnecessary energy use.
