November 1st through the 30th is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). The goal of NaNoWriMo is to write a 50,000 word (about 175 page) novel by November 30. Because of the short time period, quantity not quality is required. The key to success with this challenge is to just keep writing. Fight the urge to stop, re-read, edit, etc. If you feel overwhelmed, remember that there are people all over the world who are scrambling to write the "Great Frantic Novel" too.
Over 200,000 people participated last year and more than 30,000 met the midnight deadline. You can sign up anytime to add your name to the roster and browse the forums by visiting www.nanowrimo.org .
To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at 11:59:59. Your novel will be verified by NaNoWriMo's web-based team of robotic word counters.
