If you have been looking for a gateway into contemporary American poetry, the National Book Award finalists are not a terrible place to start. Five poets acting as judges have declared these five books to be “the best” of all poetry collections published this year, with the winner being announced at the black tie awards ceremony next Wednesday evening, November 19th at 7pm.
Whether you’re a teen who already reads mostly adult titles or are a reader looking to explore the adult collection, consider checking out the 2014 Alex Awards. This list recognizes 10 titles published for adult audiences, but with special appeal to teen readers. What have you read recently that you’d recommend?
If you ask me, awarding prizes for works of art--whether they be books, movies or single malt scotches--is pretty silly, if not quixotic. I mean, how can we pretend to objectively declare something as complex as a novel or nuanced as a great pop song to be "better" than another when most of us have our hands full deciding whether M&Ms or Reese's Pieces would go better with our Double Dutch Chocolate frozen yogurt?
