An older lawyer is driving home after meeting with a client. He is scared and worried. Suddenly in the middle of the road ahead he sees a chair with a human figure sitting in it. He stops the car and gets out to investigate. An assailant hits him from behind and he is instantly dead. At the same time, Detective Chief Inspector Kurt Wallander has been on sick leave for more than a year and he is thinking of resigning. The lawyer’s son, a friend, comes to see him, thinking that his father’s death can’t be an accident. Two weeks later, the son is shot.
