Tax season is here and your local library has resources available to help with your tax return preparation. Harris County Public Library has partnered with community organizations to bring tax preparation assistance to a location near you. Services are offered through AARP or BakerRipley and are at no cost to you.  


AARP is offering tax return preparations at 7 separate locations. Service is by appointment only. 

Documents you will need to bring to your AARP Tax Aide Appointment: 

  • A copy of last year's income tax return(s) 
  • Social Security numbers for all adults and dependents 
  • W-2 forms from each employer 
  • Unemployment compensation statements on 1099-G 
  • SSA-1099 form if you were paid Social Security benefits 
  • All 1099 forms (1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B) showing interest and/or dividends and documentation showing original purchase price and purchase date of sold assets 
  • 1099-misc showing any miscellaneous income 
  • 1099-R form if you received a pension or annuity 
  • All forms indicating federal income tax paid 
  • All receipts or canceled checks if itemizing deductions

(Note: AARP will complete a maximum of 25 tax returns per day at this location).


BakerRipley is offering tax return preparations and amendments, ITIN application and renewal, and Child Tax Credit assistance. Walk-ins only.  

Documents you will need to bring to your BakerRipley visit: 

  • Social Security card or ITIN Letters for each family member 
  • Photo ID 
  • Documentation of income 
  • W-2 and 1099 forms for all jobs worked 
  • List of checks or cash received for work 
  • Interest and Dividends  
  • Social Security  
  • Unemployment 
  • Retirement 
  • Documentation of expenses paid 
  • Business expenses and mileage if you worked for yourself 
  • Childcare provider name, address, tax ID # 
  • Tuition and books for college (form 1098-T if received) 
  • Health Insurance statement (1095-A) if purchased through Marketplace 
  • Student loan interests 
  • If you own a home or are itemizing  
  • Mortgage interest 
  • Property taxes 
  • Donations to charities 
  • Out-of-pocket medical payments 
  • IRS and/or Government letters that prove you received Economic Impact Payment (stimulus check) and/or Child Tax Credit advance payment(s) 
  • Check with bank account and routing number 
  • Last year’s tax return
