200 Years of Pride and Prejudice

This week marks the 200th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen’s most famous and popular work, Pride and Prejudice [2]. Sold to a publisher for just £110, the novel has now sold more than 20 million copies and spawned numerous film adaptations. Since 1995, the year actor Colin Firth jumped in to the lake in the BBC adaptation, love of the novel and the character of Mr. Darcy has been at a fever pitch, and numerous unauthorized sequels and retellings, mostly focusing on Mr. Darcy, have been written for lovers of Austen and Pride and Prejudice to enjoy. Austen’s work continues to be incredibly popular and hugely influential on modern romance novels, and Mr. Darcy continues to be, for many, the perfect romance hero.
