A friend of mine played a trick on me. I didn’t want to watch the TV series Castle [2]. Just looked too “cute” for me. However, she kept after me and I promised to watch an episode or two. Now one of the things my friend likes about the show is the interaction between the main character, writer Richard Castle, and the female police detective, Kate Beckett. That’s not what hooked me. What got me and made me a fan is the interaction between Richard Castle and his teenage daughter Alexis. I love movies and TV series that show a close, positive father-daughter relationship.
So now I’m a regular watcher of Castle and look forward to it every week. Yeah, the budding romance between Castle and Beckett is fun. But I mostly look forward to the scenes between father and daughter. And, of course, that made me think of other movies and TV shows that I've enjoyed over the years.
- To Kill a Mockingbird [3] (1962) – Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch, a widower raising two children. Mary Badham co-stars as daughter Jean Louise, otherwise known as “Scout.” Scout’s view of the world is shaped by her loving father more than anyone or anything else. It’s hard to imagine a better role model than Atticus.
- Father of the Bride [4] (1991) – Yes, it is a remake of the 1950 movie. But I like this one a bit more because it shows a more of the relationship between the father and daughter, how close they are – and how he worries that her upcoming marriage will change that. Stars Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams as father and daughter, with Diane Keaton as the mother.
- Nim’s Island [5] (2008) – Based on the popular children’s book, Nim lives on an isolated island with her scientist father Dr. Jack Rusoe. When her dad goes missing, a worried Nim contacts favorite author Alexandra Rover through email, telling of her fear for her father – and thus setting in motion an adventure for all.
- Wallander [6] (2008) – If any man needed a loving and supportive child, it’s sad, disillusioned Swedish detective Kurt Wallander. Thank goodness he has a daughter like Linda. Excellent though sometimes dark mystery series. Stars Kenneth Branagh and Jeany Spark.
