Computer Use Policy
Harris County Public Library provides desktop computer for public use. This policy informs the public about the acceptable use of those computers.

Acceptable Use
The Library provides access to the Internet and many different software, free of charge. Customers may bring their own USB flash drives, headphones, and discs to use with Library computers.
Library Liability
Customers should be aware that software or files downloaded from the Internet may contain a virus. The Library is not responsible for damage to a customer's USB or personal computer, or for any loss of data, damage or liability that may occur from customer use of the Library's computers.
Unacceptable Use
Damage to Library Property
Customers may not make any attempt to damage computer equipment or software, alter software configurations. Customers may not disconnect or render Library computers inoperable by disconnecting electrical connections, network connections, or any accessory plugged in to the computer.
Malicious Activity
Library computers may not be used in any activity which is deliberately and maliciously offensive or libelous. Library workstations may not be used for any illegal or criminal purpose including violation of copyright laws. Violations may result in loss of access. Unlawful activities will be dealt with in an appropriate manner.
Personal Data
To preserve the privacy of our customers, the Library uses software to automatically wipe all activity and documents opened or downloaded on our public computers. This data wipe happens when a session is ended or a customer logs off. If a customer walks away from a computer without logging off from their session, another customer who uses that computer immediately after may encounter previous documents and activity. It is the customer's responsibility to log off properly once they are finished using a computer.
Time Limits
- There is a maximum limit of 1 hour of computer time per session when others are waiting.
- Library staff can end your computer session at any time if they observe malicious activity or misuse of Library property.
Printing Costs
- Users may print documents to library printers: the cost is $.10 per black-and-white page, $.50 per color page.
