HCPL believes in whole person literacy, we support traditional literacy across all audiences from birth to adulthood.
Literacy
Early Literacy is important.
It is never too early to start your child on a lifelong reading journey. Study after study has shown that reading to children even before they can talk has real benefits for their development as readers and learners. Becoming a Nation of Readers reports that “the single most important activity for building knowledge for their eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.” Continuing to read with your children as they grow fosters academic achievement and self-esteem.

Readers become achievers
Our youth literacy approach encompasses children from birth through 12th grade. We are committed to helping children develop a lifelong love for reading, knowing that this is one of the strongest pathways to a life of meaningful literacy. Our programs range from story times for babies to teen book clubs reading the latest YA titles.

It is NEVER too late to learn to read.
HCPL's adult literacy program is designed for adults who speak English well, but who want to learn to read and write better. Students and volunteers meet one-on-one at one of our branch libraries. Classes are free. All books and materials are provided by the library.
