This Week in History: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin's big words : the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by  Doreen Rappaport

I love reading books about history, but that was not always the case.  As a child, most of my history lessons came from textbooks which I found utterly boring. It was not until my Mother took me to the local library that I realized "history" was not just about facts and dates.

Teens: Make Your Voice Heard! Join The Teen Advisory Board

Calling all teens! Do you have great ideas for Young Adult programs? Do you know cool ways to promote the library and all its wonders? Do you want to make your voice heard? Then join Atascocita's first official Teen Advisory Board! In addition to earning valuable community service hours for college, you will get the chance to plan Young Adult programs and develop projects to promote library services.

Who can participate?  Teens ages 13 to 18 years old are welcome to apply. You must be able to attend monthly meetings and participate in any projects that the board undertakes.

When do we meet? After all the board members are chosen, we will pick a date and time each month that will work for everyone.

Applications are available at the front desk and are due September 15th. If you have any questions or comments, you can leave them for me here or call me (Miss Darla) at 281-812-2162.

Kids Celebrate National Aviation Week

As many of you know, we provide a special storytime for families. Twilight Tales is held every Monday night @ 7:00 p.m. and all ages are welcome. It has been my experience that children have a fascination with airplanes. So, this week we will be celebrating National Aviation Week.  Below are few ideas to extend your child's storytime experience.

Atascocita Writers' Group

Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go. – E. L. Doctorow

Based on both the online and paper surveys, the verdict is for Mondays at 2:00 PM.  The first meeting of the Atascocita Writers' Group will be Monday, September 14.  All writers ages 18 and over are welcome to join us as we begin this new exploration.  We'll establish how often we will meet and the basic running of the group as well as share resources.
