'Tis the Season

Driving home the other evening, I noticed some Christmas decorations already up for the season and got to thinking that maybe it was time to create a display of children's picture books celebrating this time of the year.  If you are ready to read and share some delightful stories with the younger readers you know (and yourself, too!), please come to the library and check our display and I'm sure you will find some books you will like.  We have two holiday reading displays and, as always, can help you find other books you would like.  Just ask, and let us find those books for stocking stuffers!

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

I was browsing the Family Communications website and found a toolkit developed for their Mr. Rogers “Won’t You Be My Neighbor Day,” celebrated on March 20, 2009. The toolkit contains many ideas including activity and promotion ideas, plus support materials. On the 3rd page of the toolkit, you can click on the link to “booklist" to access an annotated list of 50 books divided into 5 main topics with 10 titles per topic: “Acceptance of Diversity,” “Being a Caring Person,” “Friends/ Friendship,” “Neighborliness/ Kindness/ Generosity,” and “Special Needs.”   The titles are appropriate for children ranging in age from preschool to 10 years old.

Escape reality!

HeartsIn these difficult economic times, people are reading more romance novels. Why not spend a little time reading about someone else’s tribulations and triumphs (often in exotic locales)? If you’re already a romance reader, check out your favorite publisher’s web site, such as Avon or Harlequin (which also includes Silhouette). You can buy books, larger print books, audiobooks or ebooks or find titles to check out from the library. You can read books online

Baseball in the Park

One of the perks of the library's location being inside the William "Bill" Bane Park is that there often are Little League Baseball games being played at various times throughout the year.  Being a baseball fan, it is fun to see some of the games and listen to the spectators cheering for the players.  The book collection at the Fairbanks Branch Library includes a large section of materials about sports, including baseball, football, basketball, soccer, and others.  No matter what sport(s) you may like, the library has books you can use.  So come by the library and let us help you find the books you need.

Holiday Cooking & Decorating

Are you starting to think about what to cook during the coming holiday season?  If so, then the library has an outstanding selection of cookbooks to use to plan your holiday menus and we have created a display of recommended cookbooks which contain delicious and tasty recipes.  This display features cookbooks with recipes guaranteed to be a success at any time and especially for the holidays. Also, there is a new display of books with many helpful ideas for decorating for the holidays.  So, there is no need to "re-invent any wheels" this holiday season--just visit the library and find books, as well as magazines, that will help make your decorating and cooking a success and enjoyable.
