Harris County Public Library invites you to join our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten reading challenge for ages 0 to 5 years old.
What is 1000 Books Before Kindergarten?
1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a nationwide early literacy initiative that helps nurture a love of reading in children and prepares them for future success in school.
Why 1000 Books?
Reading grows your child’s social and emotional skills, sparks their imagination and creativity, strengthens their bonds with you, and will help them succeed in school.

Is reading 1000 books possible?
Yes! You got this! And remember, HCPL is here to help! From providing books, reading logs, story time, and services such as Book Bundles, opens a new window, we’ll help you and your child log 1000 books. Log every book that you read together, log every time you reread a book, log the books you hear during story time, and log the books your family and friends read aloud to your child.
Where do I sign my child up for 1000 Books?
Register your child today when you sign into Beanstack at hcpl.beanstack.org, opens a new window . Beanstack is a web-based reading challenge software that HCPL uses for Summer Reading. There’s also a Beanstack Tracker, opens a new window app available for Apple and Android users.
After you join the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge on Beanstack, start logging your books! Readers will earn prizes when they reach the following reading milestones: 100 Books, 250 Books, 500 Books, 750 Books, and 1000 Books.
It doesn’t matter if your child is three or just three months – there’s no better time to start than now! Open a book and get started!
