5 Reasons to “Fiesta!” at Baldwin Boettcher Branch Library This Year

Not that you ever need a reason to celebrate, but the Baldwin Boettcher Branch Library is serving up an amazing Fiesta to mark Hispanic Heritage Month.  It’s the perfect excuse to get the whole family out to the party!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 20th—because this year’s Fiesta is going to be bigger, brighter, and more fun than ever.

Here are FIVE reasons you’ll want to be there:

 1. Masterpiece on Wheels

Feast your eyes on Jorge Morales’ award-winning 1963 Impala SS Lowrider—a “Best in Class” AutoRama champion.  Years in the making, this rolling work of art blends craftsmanship, culture, and style.  Trust us: you’ll want a photo with this showstopper!  And while supplies last, grab a free HCPL keychain or air freshener giveaway.

2.  Celebrity Author + Free Books for Kids

What’s better than celebrating culture and community?  Taking home a free book!  Emmy-nominated filmmaker and author Raquel M. Ortiz brings her bilingual picture book When Julia Danced Bomba / Cuando Julia bailaba bomba to life.  Families can drum, dance, and sing along while discovering the Afro-Caribbean tradition of bomba.

This one-of-a-kind event includes storytime, multimedia, puppets, and dance.  And the best part?  The first 50 families will snag a free copy of the book!

3.  Dancing!  Mixteco Ballet Folklórico Performing - Live!

The internationally acclaimed Mixteco Ballet Folklórico will perform dazzling traditional dances from Nuevo León.  Travel south of the border and experience how European influences from Germany, Austria, Poland, and Czechoslovakia helped shape Mexican dance traditions.  Don’t miss the fast-paced zapateados, lively polkas, and flamenco-inspired rhythms that bring these cultural stories to life.

4.  Kids Can Create Art with Frida Kahlo

Through a little “Time Travel Magic,” the legendary artist Frida Kahlo herself will lead children in an art class inspired by her bold, creative spirit.  Kids will let their imaginations soar while learning about one of the world’s most iconic painters.  They can create their own puppets or Bomba Drums inspired by When Julia Danced Bomba. Kids can also paint and take home their own Amate (bark) creation inspired by the people of Xalitla, Mexico.

5.  Discover the Rebuilt Baldwin Boettcher Library

Have you seen it yet?  This beautiful library recently reopened after an extensive rebuild and is ready to be your next home away from home.  Nestled beside one of Harris County’s best-kept secrets—the Mercer Arboretum and Botanical Gardens—it’s the perfect place to wander shaded trails, find inspiration among the flowers, or simply enjoy a quiet moment in nature.

More Than a Fiesta — it’s a Vibe

Fiesta isn’t just about what’s planned—it’s about the energy and community.  Enjoy craft stations, refreshments, music, and plenty of community spirit in the beautiful Baldwin Boettcher Library.
