Explore Local History

It is a truth universally accepted that history buffs love a good story. With the stunning speed by which we can now record our stories – monthly, weekly, daily, and by the hour, even – history buff posterity will suffer no lack of entertainment for many generations to come. But even with videos, news articles, and podcasts, there’s still something special about the humble history book and something even more special about those books written by those closest to the story itself: local history publications.

HCPL has a fantastic collection of over a hundred local histories in the Images of America series by Arcadia Publishing. It is an ongoing series that covers cities, towns, and areas across the United States. It specializes in picture-heavy histories written by local authors, who often are simply members of the community who decided they had a story that needed to be told.

Images of America: Tomball

One of the most recently published titles (so recent, even, that we can’t yet provide a catalog link) is of the history of Tomball. You may know Tomball from the Tomball German Heritage Festival or the Tomball German Christmas Market, but now you’ll have the chance to get to know the City of Tomball and its people even better. The LSC-Tomball Community Library’s own Genealogy Librarian, Kyla Bayang, edited and wrote the book in collaboration with other long-time members of the Tomball community. It was a labor of love that took three years to research and compile, and the publishing date is just around the corner!

The LSC-Tomball Community Library is celebrating the launch with a book party on January 11th, from 10:30am to 12pm, and all are invited to enjoy activities, refreshments, and reminisces!
