History

In June 1921, the La Porte Branch of Harris County Public Library started with 110 books placed at La Porte High School. On February 8, 1929, the La Porte Branch of Harris County Public Library on West A Street was completed. It served the public until 1982. The building has been restored and moved to the Sylvan Beach Depot Museum and Library.

The Edith Wilson Public Library of Harris County Public Library on San Jacinto Street was dedicated on October 2, 1982. It stayed in operation until the current facility, La Porte Community Library on South Broadway, was dedicated on September 20, 2001. The City of La Porte owns and maintains the library building, while Harris County Public Library provides staff, computers, and the collection.
