In a fantastic blend of literature and real-life stories, Elvira K. Gonzalez, author of the moving Young Adult memoir Hurdles in the Dark, recently met with teens from Harris County’s Juvenile Probation Department at HCPL's Evelyn Meador Branch Library. Released in 2024, Gonzalez's memoir shares her tough experiences growing up in Laredo, Texas, from her mother’s kidnapping by the Mexican cartel to her journey as a young athlete overcoming personal challenges.
Selected as a featured read for HCPL's 2025 Tournament of Books, Hurdles in the Dark tackles difficult topics like family trauma, resilience, and the struggles young athletes face, including abuse and manipulation. LeeAnn Jennings, HCPL's Youth Literacy Service Specialist, describes Tournament of Books as, "An exciting book club where teens explore 12 great Young Adult titles across different genres. Anything from Fantasy to Manga to Hometown Hero's to Post-Apocalyptic Adventures- we've got something for everyone. Every Spring, teens from across Harris County will test their book knowledge by answering questions and describing how each book stuck with them."
When asked why she selected Gonzalez’s memoir, Jennings explained, "Elvira's book was selected for a number of reasons. Reading her story was hard, it was uncomfortable at times. But that was the point. We selected this book because of the message behind it. That no matter what you face, never give up. Ms. Gonzalez even signed a few of our copies of her book with that phase. "Never. Give. Up." Elvira herself reflects upon her inability to find books about kids like her growing up. Books she could relate to and see herself in. I think it's incredibly powerful that she saw this gap and said I'm going to be the one who fills it."
Gonzalez was invited to be a guest judge for the Tournament of Books Championship Game, allowing young readers the unique opportunity to meet an author of a book they have read. While in Houston, on February 28th, a special field trip brought residents from Harris County's Youth Village to meet Gonzalez for an Author Talk. During this event, she led a meaningful discussion with the juvenile probation youth and public attendees, fostering engagement and conversation around her work.
During the event, Jennings interviewed Gonzalez, allowing the youth to submit questions beforehand. The atmosphere was filled with energy as the teens showed genuine interest in her own experiences within the juvenile probation system, her changing family relationships, and her inspiring journey through writing. “The interaction between the author and the youth from HCJPD was so inviting and personal,” said Berenice Sosa, HCJPD Outreach Specialist. “You could really feel the connection they had in the room.”
Jennings shared her thoughts on the emotional impact of the event, saying, "Meeting Ms. Gonzalez was so cool! She's such a sweet and kind person... Watching her interact with the youth... it was hard not to get emotional." Her genuine nature resonated with attendees, highlighting the importance of sharing one’s story and advocating for those who may not have a voice.
At the end of the event, attendees had the chance to chat with Gonzalez personally. The young women from Youth Village found comfort in her words, sharing their thoughts and connecting in a meaningful way. The impact was strengthened when Elvira wrote letters to the girls she spoke with, which were delivered later—a thoughtful gesture that left a lasting impression and a sense of hope.
This special day showcased how storytelling can heal and empower individuals. Gonzalez’s memoir serves as a reminder of resilience, and her connection with young readers aims to inspire the next generation to share their stories and stand strong against adversity.
Elvira K. Gonzalez’s journey from a challenging childhood to becoming an author highlights the power of using our voices and building connections through our life stories —an important lesson for everyone.
