For the first time ever Gulf Coast Reads, the annual regional one book program for adults, is being offered as a reading challenge on Beanstack. For readers unfamiliar with Beanstack, it is the web-based software that HCPL uses for reading challenges like Summer Reading and 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. What is Gulf Coast Reads?
Gulf Coast Reads is a unique collaborative reading initiative that focuses on promoting literacy and building community. Librarians at HCPL and various participating library systems and schools work together to host book discussions and programs centered around one book. What is the Gulf Coast Reads book for 2025?
After the committee read and reviewed multiple titles to narrow down nominations to the top three, the final book selection was put to a public vote. This year readers chose The Faculty Lounge, opens a new window by Jennifer Mathieu as the Gulf Coast Reads selection. For the month of October, The Faculty Lounge ebook and eaudiobook is available instantly on Libby.
How do I join the Gulf Coast Reads Reading Challenge on Beanstack?
Log into Beanstack at hcpl.beanstack.org and join the Gulf Coast Reads challenge. If you don’t have a Beanstack account, don’t worry, you can sign up at any time! If you need any help logging into your account, reach out to your local HCPL library or use the Beanstack Contact Us form.

Sorry kiddos, this reading challenge is only available on Beanstack for readers 18 and up.
How do I complete the Gulf Coast Reads reading challenge on Beanstack?
We know y’all have busy schedules, so we’re making it as easy as possible. You just have to log your reading for The Faculty Lounge and complete at least three of the 15 activities available. Activities include checking out the book, attending a Gulf Coast Reads program or book club at your library, checking out the Freegal playlist inspired by the book, or sharing your review of the book.
How do I log my reading on Beanstack?
If you are logged into your account, click on the big green “Log Reading and Activities” button on the top left side. To log the book as complete, click on the “Gulf Coast Reads” button, then click on The Faculty Lounge cover, and “Log Reading”. You do not need to log minutes, just that you have finished reading the book.
How do I log activities on Beanstack?
Click on the same big green “Log Reading and Activities” button, and this time click on “Complete an Activity” button. This will open all the Gulf Coast Reads activity badges. Click on a badge and mark it as complete. Notice that some activity badges may require a text response.
Is Gulf Coast Reads only available on Beanstack?
No! Our goal is to engage new readers in new ways and Beanstack is just one tool we are using to do so. The best way to participate is to join us in person at the various Gulf Coast Reads events across HCPL. Check out HCPL’s events calendar to find a program near you.
