PINs Required for Some Library Transactions Starting February 3.

In order to prevent unauthorized use of library cards, starting on February 3, 2024, HCPL patrons will be required to use their Personal Identification Number (PIN) when using self-checkout machines, the Overdrive Digital Catalog, and the Libby app.

We at Harris County Public Library take your privacy and the security of your library records very seriously. Granted, the security of your library account is not as important as that of your social security number or your credit card accounts, but it is important. Think about it. Do you really want all your friends to know that you checked out books on bankruptcy, divorce, or other sensitive topics? Even if your check-out history has nothing you would not mind discussing publicly, you would not allow a stranger to check out books with your library card, would you? Of course not. The new PIN requirement aims to protect your privacy and security. It's that simple.

Your Personal Identification Number (PIN)

Your PIN is the 4-digit number you chose when creating your library account. If you know your PIN, you are all set. If you do not remember your PIN, you can reset it. The easiest and fastest way to reset your PIN is to do it yourself online. Please note that in order to do this, you will need to have an email address on file with the library so that we can send you a PIN reset link. If you have received hold notifications or other notices in the past from the library, chances are very good that we have your email on file. If you don't have an email on file with us, or you no longer have access to the one we have on file, you will need to call, visit, or email us.

3 Options for Resetting Your PIN

If you know your PIN, you are good to go! There's no need to reset it. But if you don't remember your PIN, you have three options:

How to Reset Your PIN Online
