You could have fit everything I knew about sewing into a thimble.
That is why I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I was asked to join a group of eager students at our Evelyn Meador Branch Library in Seabrook for a sewing class. But by the end of the class, that big sewing machine I used to watch my mom spend countless hours with was no longer a mystery. Instead, I saw it for what it is: an amazing tool with endless possibilities. I owe this new knowledge to one of HCPL’s spectacular new volunteers.
Renowned fiber artist and celebrated author Bianca Springer is no stranger to HCPL. In fact, her business started within the very walls where she is now sharing her wisdom and experience with students. A few years ago, when Bianca was a new mother, she discovered her local Harris County library's Maker Space resources and took some classes on the various machines. With these free classes and her background in sewing, she utilized the library’s available tools, like the laser cutter, to create unique patterns for a variety of products and launch her business, Thanks! I Made Them, Sew Can You.
Now, she's giving back to the community.
Bianca is now sharing her expertise and passion for sewing in her class "What Does This Thing Do?" You'll learn the basic features of your sewing machine and get started on your sewing journey. Basic sewing supplies and fabric will be provided for in-class use, and you're welcome to bring your own sewing machine for some expert insights.
Bianca's journey exemplifies how HCPL can be a launchpad for creative entrepreneurs. By providing access to equipment, knowledgeable staff, and a supportive community, the library empowers individuals to explore their passions and turn their ideas into reality. As Bianca says, the library is a place where you can develop your own creative voice and establish community.
I had a chance to speak with Bianca after her class and she had some great insights on business and crafts.
Q: How do you think teaching classes for the library will impact your own creative process or perspective?
A: Learning environments often spark creativity. Hearing people's stories generally opens a dialogue for problem-solving and collaborative conversations. As a teacher, I'm always looking for opportunities to learn.
Q: How has the library helped you with the business side of your creative endeavor?
A: The equipment in the innovation labs gave me chances to experiment and play with tools I would not normally have access to. The machines provided opportunities to test products and ideas without significant upfront costs. Expert staff were often available to help me tweak ideas and fine-tune processes.
Q: Was there a specific moment or experience at the library that made you realize the potential of the maker space for your business?
A: I was experimenting with cutting cork fabric on the laser. I designed an intricately cut necklace from the material and shared it on my social media. Almost immediately, one of my followers sent me a direct message. She loved the creation and was interested in purchasing it from me. I made a sale and ignited my interest in finding other products I could create with the laser.
Q: What advice would you give to other aspiring makers or entrepreneurs who are considering using the library's maker space?
A: My advice would be to dedicate some time to get to know the machines and equipment available to you. See how they can fit into your current business model or how they can accelerate it. It's a great opportunity to experiment without the tremendous financial burden of equipment that may not be suitable, there is a learning curve with the machines and it can feel daunting and possibly a poor use of time. It is worth exploring what is possible to see how your business can grow.
